1. Thien Mu Pagoda – sacred pagoda with “love curse” 

  • Address: Thien Mu Pagoda is located in Ha Khe hill, 148 Nguyễn Phúc Nguyên, Huong Long commune. It is about 5 kilometers from the center of Hue city.

Thien Mu pagoda which is also called Linh Mụ is the most well-known pagoda in Hue. It is considered one of the must-see attractions while traveling in Hue. Thanks to the location, the pagoda owns such a picturesque view. A lot of tourists and local people visit the pagoda every day for not only the view but also the history. The name of the pagoda is associated with a legendary story meaning “Heaven Fairy Lady”. This is an old-standing pagoda, so there are rumors about it. 2. Standing Lady Buddha Temple – where people pray for study and career

  • Address: Tu Tuong Mountain, Thượng II Village, Thuy Xuan Commune, Huong Thuy District, Thua Thien Hue Province

As you may know by the name, this pagoda is appealing for the amazing huge buddha temple. Standing Lady Buddha Temple is also known as the statue of Quan Am was built in 1969 and restored in 1999. The statue of Phat Dung is 14 meters high, 24.6 tons weight and 10m high lotus platform. If you have the opportunity to visit Hue, you should spend time visiting the lady buddha temple Temple – one of the most sacred pagodas in Hue.

 The temple located inthe mountainous region which has four mountains like the four elephants named Tu Tuong Mountain. The statue is located at the top of one of the four elephants.  Surrounding the statue of Phat Dung is the magnificent view of mountains covered by vast pine forest.

This temple is popular with students. In Vietnam, exams are a part of students’ and pupils’ life, especially the entrance exam before university. Before the important exams, students usually come here and carry a bottle of water and incense to pray. Also, people who are looking for jobs usually come to this pagoda. 3. Từ Hiếu Pagoda – the symbol of filial piety

  • Address: Duong Xuan Mountain, Dương Xuân Thượng III Village, Thuy Xuan commune, Hue city. It is located about 5 km southwest of Hue city.

Tu Hieu Pagoda was founded in 1843. It is a historic pagoda located quite far from the city center. The Pagoda remains its ancient atmosphere and architecture. Thus, you can learn a lot about Buddhism in Vietnam in the old days. Also, the story behind is moved and there are more things to discover in the pagoda. Its legend went back with the story of a Monk called Thich Nhat Dinh. Because of his story, this pagoda was named “Tu Hieu”. “Từ” in Vietnamese means mercifulness, “Hiếu” means filial piety. 

Tu Hieu Pagoda is not only famous for its story of filial piety, but also the unique architecture and poetic nature. At the gate of the pagoda, there is a three-story tower built-in 1896 used as a place to store the royal ordinance of the king. In front of the road to the main hall is a beautiful semicircle lake where grows lotus and colorful fish. Particularly, coming to Tu Hieu Pagoda, you should not miss a chance to visit a special cemetery which is the burial place of more than 24 eunuchs under the Nguyen Dynasty.

4. Từ Đàm pagoda – The Famous Pagoda among Locals

  • Address: 01 Su Lieu Quan Street, Truong An Ward, Hue City, Thua Thien Hue Province, located about 2 km south of Hue city.

Tu Dam Pagoda was founded in 1695 by Superior Buddhist Monk Minh Hoang – Tu Dung. The pagoda lasted through a long history and was restored and repaired many times under the reign of several Kings. In 1841, under the reign of King Thieu Tri, the 3rd King of Nguyen dynasty, An Ton pagoda was renamed Tu Dam pagoda meaning the benevolent cloud, symbolizing Buddha.

Located near the city center, Tu Dam Pagoda is not hard to find. If you pay a visit on 30th, 1st and 15th of a lunar month, it can be crowded there since the locals usually visit the pagoda and worship on those days. Besides history, coming here, you will admire the beautiful architecture of Tu Dam Pagoda. The architecture of Tu Dam Pagoda is a perfect combination of traditional and modern architecture. Tam Quan gate (three-way entrance of Vietnamese traditional pagoda) was built in 1965. Behind the gate, there is a 70-year-old bodhi tree which was planted in 1936.

  • Tourists should wear polite clothes, don’t wear too short or slim clothes like short skirts, three holes shirt, etc when visiting the pagoda.
  • Don’t talk loudly when visiting the pagoda.
  • Don’t take photos when you are inside the worship place and do not wear shoes on the place of worship
  • You should not use and take any furniture of the pagoda
